GIVE HOSPITAL A CHANCE!

Having read about the proposals concerning knocking down the old ST Augustines care home in Cobridge and rebuilding it into a new psychiatric unit which as caused a lot of concern .Let put the matter right having worked in mental health for quite a while and have certificates on this subject it is blown out of proportion a lot as these people are not violent people they just happen to be unlucky to suffer this illness and 1 in 4 people suffer some mental ill health in their life .I myself have a very close relative who as experienced mental ill health for several years and was in a secure unit but as made a full recovery and is in a good job with qualifications so before discriminating - think again as a lot of people have gone through a bad experience past as my relative did.

Sadly the media get things wrong - which happened in the Sentinel in the coverage of St. Augustines and the proposed future developments.

We have to remember - boring news doesn't sell newspapers!

Hi Joseph

I don't think we've been introduced yet. I'm Shirley and I'm the latest member of the MAGMH team, officially the Media and Communications Co-ordinator but I'll be getting stuck in with other things, I guess!

I noticed your letter in The Sentinel and also your blog, and thought it'd be great to have a chat sometime soon - especially as you have worked in the mental health field. It'd be really useful to me to be have a good old chin wag with you at some point and sound out your opinions and experiences and perhaps we could work together to push the positive message to the media.

I'd love to know what you think - anyway, hopefully I'll see you at next Monday's meeting. I understand you were ill last week, so I hope you're feeling better.
